Losing control is frightening. Most of us push for things to happen a certain way and attach ourselves to specific outcomes. However, the reality is that things unfold much more smoothly when we let go. Embrace the art of surrender to open up possibilities; you may be losing out on great things due to a fear of losing control.

Here’s how you can find the right balance between holding on and letting go:

Mediate

Mediation is a centuries-old practice that bolsters mindfulness. It’s a good way to understand yourself on a deeper level and practice control. Through this process, you can release stress and anxiety and gain perspective. Meditation helps you fully accept the fact that not everything can be controlled.

Some things are just beyond human control and you can’t change them. From emotions to outcomes, past and future, meditation helps you make peace with what you can’t alter. However, meditation also helps you see that you can fully control your reactions to events. In most cases, this is a transformative factor.

Reflect

While meditation requires long-term discipline and commitment, mere reflection only takes a couple of minutes at most. Reflect on your actions, behaviors and attitude—how have they affected those around you?

If your loved ones think you’re becoming somewhat of a ‘control freak,’ it’s time for you to take it slow. Know what you can and can’t control. For example, you can order food but you can’t control when it will arrive. This can help you monitor your behavior and manage your expectations.A person meditating
